A Spiritual Hero....

Do you think you could be a superhero? Okay, maybe not Superman, Batman or Spiderman but how about a Spiritual Superhero? A person who is wholly surrendered to Christ, one who isn’t afraid to sit at the “uncool” table at school, one who wants the whole world to know of the saving grace of Jesus Christ and one who doesn’t care what the world thinks of them because they know how God views them?

When I think of a spiritual superhero I think of Paul. Paul was one of the most influential men in the New Testament besides Jesus Christ. But when we first are introduced to Paul in the first part of Acts, we probably wouldn’t think of Paul as a spiritual superhero because he was murdering the followers of Christ. But God transformed his life and made him a spiritual superhero. So what made him a spiritual superhero?
His Focus- Paul had a passionate relationship with Jesus Christ and His focus was only on Christ.
His Mission- Was to reach as many people with the gospel as possible.
His Awareness- Paul knew his strong points and his weaknesses.
His Commitment- Paul was running the race that God had set before him and he was running to win!

Something that I struggle with when I think about following in the footsteps of Paul is that I feel like I’m too ordinary. I don’t have a dramatic conversion like Paul did and I’ve never had a face to face encounter with Jesus either. I have to remind myself that God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things!
Whenever I am about to do something “hero-like” I feel Satan reminding me of all my failures and weaknesses but the promise lies in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10. “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness. So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Sanctus Real’s song “Hero” fits this perfectly.

You might think You’ll never be the one to save the day
Will do anything that matters in the world
But God can take your ordinary life and do great things
When you step out in faith

You don’t need to be the biggest alive
Don’t need to be the strongest to fight
For what’s right because a hero’s great for
Who they are inside
Don’t need to be the tallest in line
You could be the smallest in size
And if your hearts right you could be our hero tonight

So will you take the little that you have and make a change
For the weak and helpless in the world
If you embrace the journey that’s before you
Lead the way
Your faith will guide you
And in your weakness
You will find your strength
